Young, Arizona
is located in Gila County approximately 60 miles Southeast of Payson,
Arizona. From Payson, travel east on Arizona highway 260 to mile marker
284. Soon, you will see the Young Road turnoff. Travel south
another 25 miles along Forest Service Road 512 (soon to become Arizona
highway 288) and you will eventually arrive in downtown Young.
Eventually...because
you will likely stop several
times along the way to enjoy the surroundings or perhaps allow
wildlife to cross the road. A trip to Young is not to be
rushed, rather it should be savored and enjoyed.
It wasn't so long ago
that gasoline had to be
pumped using a "gravity fed pump" because electricity didn't come to
Young until about 1965. Cellular Phone Service finally arrived in
2009. Even today, complete strangers will wave to you as you pass them
on the road.
Of course, you'll still
be able to find all the essentials at
the Cherry Creek Store and Buddi's Gas Mart, but you won't find
any chain stores or well known fast food restaurants.
Young is steeped in history,
some not so pleasant such as the
long running fued between the Grahams and the Tewksburys.
It's all settled now, but not before a great deal of
bloodshed. Locals will be glad to fill you in on all the details of
this episode known as the "Pleasant Valley
War".
So much of Young is literally
surrounded by the Tonto National Forest
that it's hard to tell where Young ends and the forest begins.
Many properties (incuding Cherry Creek Cabins) back up
to the
Tonto National Forest.
Now that you know where
Young is, come on up for a visit!
